“Fighter” is a 2024 Indian Hindi-language action film directed by Siddharth Anand, co-written by Ramon Chibb and Siddharth Anand. It is produced by Viacom18 Studios and Marflix Pictures and stars Anil Kapoor, Hrithik Roshan, and Deepika Padukone in prominent roles. The film marks Siddharth Anand’s production debut and his third collaboration with Hrithik Roshan after “Bang Bang!” (2014) and “War” (2019).

The film was officially announced on 10 January 2021, but its pre-production faced delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic. “Fighter” is the first installment in a planned aerial action franchise and incorporates references to significant events such as the 2019 Pulwama attack, 2019 Balakot airstrike, and 2019 India–Pakistan border skirmishes. The film’s soundtrack, composed by Vishal–Shekhar, features five songs, while cinematography is handled by Satchith Paulose. DNEG is responsible for the film’s visual effects.

Initially slated for a theatrical release on 30 September 2022, production delays pushed the release date to 25 January 2024, coinciding with the Republic Day weekend. Despite receiving mixed reviews from critics, “Fighter” emerged as the highest-grossing Indian film of 2024 and the highest-grossing Hindi film of the year, earning ₹211.50 crore (US$26 million) nett in India and ₹337.2 crore (US$42 million) worldwide.

Plot of Fighter

In Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, a terrorist organization led by Azhar Akhtar plans to attack India, targeting the Srinagar Air Force Station. Group Captain Rakesh “Rocky” Jai Singh forms a team called “Air Dragons,” comprising skilled fighter pilots including Squadron Leaders Shamsher “Patty” Pathania, Minal “Minni” Rathore, Sartaj “Taj” Gill, Basheer “Bash” Khan, and Sukhdeep “Sukhi” Singh.

During training, the team members bond, but Patty is haunted by past trauma. They learn of an attack on CRPF soldiers in Pulwama orchestrated by Akhtar. The Indian Air Force, with RAW agent Zarina Begum, plans a counterattack on Akhtar’s base in Balakot. Despite succeeding, it leads to conflict with Pakistan. When Taj and Bash are captured, Patty is suspended and placed as a flying instructor.

Minni learns of Rocky’s grudge against Patty for his sister’s death in a past mission. As the Pakistani government promises to return Taj and Bash, Sukhi reveals Bash’s murder by Akhtar. Patty, determined to rescue Taj, defies orders and leads a covert mission. They succeed, rescuing Taj and eliminating Akhtar. In the end, Patty and Minni celebrate their victory.
